How to Choose the Best Location for My Family Portrait?

Clients often ask me for recommendations on the best place to take a family portrait. My answer is always the same: location is important, but in the end, your image should show the emotional connections and love that you have for each other.

I ask my clients if they prefer an outdoor or a studio setting to get a sense of their comfort level. Do you pick natural settings or architectural settings for your family? It is crucial to choose a location that you can take a family photograph or a personal photo. You and your family will be able to share a lot about yourself through the site you choose.

Our family was thinking of having a portrait taken in a studio. Studio portraits are no longer reserved for those with conservative and traditional tastes. The popularity of family portraits in the studio, with solid backgrounds and modern furniture paired with coordinated colored clothing, is growing. Many families today want to replicate the fashion portraits found in clothing catalogs.

A studio portrait is typically hung above a fireplace and displayed in family rooms or staircases. Studio portraits are only taken once in a few years because there is so much to consider when choosing outfits, hairstyles, backgrounds, and other details.

Due to the limited background options, a studio portrait may not offer a wide range of poses to choose from. This can be especially difficult for toddlers; small children love to explore and roam. Toddlers love to walk and explore. The portrait light in a studio setting is usually fixed and restricted to limited space. Small children often have very limited or no room to run around in studios.

What are the advantages of taking a family portrait outdoors? Outdoor locations offer a completely different experience than studios. Outdoor areas provide more flexibility. Families have the option to choose whether their picture is formal or casual, sometimes even both. These prints can be used as mantle prints or smaller prints. Natural light from the outdoors is very beneficial for skin complexions.

You will also have more options for backgrounds, leading to a more extensive selection of portraits that you can use in prints or other memorable products. Outdoors is more stimulating and safer for toddlers so that they will be more comfortable outdoors. Your child's portrait can be captured at the right moment of the day.

Are there other locations that could be used for a family portrait? A home is another possible location that is often overlooked. A family portrait taken in your home can add a personal touch. The same principles of family portraits apply to your home as for studio portraits or outdoor portraits.

Some families choose to take a formal portrait indoors. To create a beautiful family portrait, a portrait photographer might use external lighting.

We recently created an outdoor portrait right in front of the home of one of our clients. The clients were thrilled to have a family photo to hang on their mantle.

Imagine this: I drove by their house a few days before they were due to take their portrait. I was looking for the best light and time to capture it. For this family of 3, I had four different portrait backgrounds in my head. They chose a stunning portrait in front of a magnolia tree. The results were terrific. I hope they will look back on their family portrait in years to come and recall beautiful memories. Perhaps they have moved on to a new home, and the memories of their home are relived. Maybe they still live in the same house and realize how much their magnolia tree has grown.

Portraits can bring back beautiful memories of your family.
