Some Thoughts on Avatar: The Last Airbender

The series from the universe of Avatar Netflix is working on currently continues to be one of the most waited series on Netflix. For a lot of people, seeing their favorite characters coming to life on the screen in 3D is going to be a true breath of fresh air. While the full-length movie of the franchise received mixed reviews, it still managed to garner a massive number of viewers and became one of the biggest-budget movies of all time. It's a safe bet that Avatar will once again sweep awards and dominate online discussion polls year after year.

Since the premiere of Avatar, there have been a lot of speculations about what will happen to Avatar and whether Netflix will get into the full-length feature film. The good news is that the rumors are unfounded and Netflix has nothing to do with it. CEO Hastings told reporters in May that he wasn't "actively developing" any new movies, but there have been several Avatar clips and TV shows released in the meantime. Even during the initial release of Avatar at home, there were already several popular streaming websites that got into the hype and started streaming the film to their users.

So far, there's not a lot of information about the series from Netflix. So we just have to wait and hope that the final product will be of high quality and meet all the canons. And while we wait for the series to come out, you can rewatch (or watch for the first time) the various products of the Avatar franchise that have been released before.

You can find a wide selection of Avatar movies and shows on various websites including Hulu, HBO Go, and Amazon. Right now you can catch the second half of the film in HD on HBO Go, but if you'd like to see the entire thing without commercial interruptions, it's available on Hulu and all the other major service providers.

By rewatching what's been released before and what has been praised by critics and fans, you can refresh or add to your knowledge of the franchise. This will make it easier for you to evaluate the new Netflix product not as an individual product, but as part of an entire movie universe - in terms of compliance and "laws" of that universe. The problem with many "remakes", "spinoffs" and the like is often precisely that they ignore the past "baggage" of the film universe, the previously established rules, and canons. But we won't know if the Netflix series will be an integral part of the Avatar universe until its release. So we can only wait and hope that the series will not disappoint fans.
