After Amoco Chemicals began commercial production of naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (NDC), a raw material for PEN, in 1995, polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) resin became popular in a variety of applications. Teijin began developing PEN in 1964, 31 years before it was launched as Teonex®. Teonex® has been popular as a functional material for industrial parts and food and medication wrapping materials since then, with the range of applications continually expanding. as a useful material for industrial parts and food and medication packaging materials, with an ever-expanding range of applications. Teonex® is a crystalline thermoplastic polyester that is made from a polycondensate of NDC as an acid and ethylene glycol as a glycol. It is made in a technique similar to that of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a common polyester. Teonex® is thought to be superior to PET in terms of properties. Teonex® is a crystalline resin that crystallises slowly, making translucent moulded items easier to shape. Teonex outperforms polycarbonate (PC) resin, which is commonly used in transparent moulded items, in terms of chemical and scratch resistance.
