Functional Safety refers to the use of automatic protection by a system or piece of machinery. The inputs to the automatic protection system must be handled correctly. It should also respond to failure in a predictable way. This category comprises operational/environmental stress, hardware issues, and human errors. Today, functional safety is used in many sectors, including the pharmaceutical, mining, and oil and gas industries.


The usage of automated systems in manufacturing, testing, and process control has increased, making it more crucial than ever to prevent environmental harm, accidents, and equipment damage. In the event of an unforeseen condition at a plant, Functional Safety is a secondary safety feature that ensures a safe and orderly shutdown of processing units. Oil and gas, chemicals, power generation, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, metals and mining, water and wastewater treatment, and many other industries are among those where functional safety is becoming more and more important.


SIL is a measure of the probability of a hazardous event occurring, with SIL 4 being the highest level of safety integrity. Once the safety requirements have been established, the system design can proceed. Safety design involves designing the system architecture, selecting appropriate components and subsystems, and implementing safety measures to achieve the required SIL. Safety design may also involve the use of redundancy, fault tolerance, and diagnostic measures to enhance the system's reliability and availability.

 

Safety verification and validation are critical components of the Functional Safety process. Safety verification involves ensuring that the system design meets the safety requirements, while safety validation involves demonstrating that the system operates correctly under all foreseeable conditions. Safety verification and validation may involve a range of techniques, such as simulation, testing, and analysis.
