
This unit will develop the investigative skills needed to conduct research within the industry at a higher degree level through research or postgraduate coursework. Students will learn about scientific research methods, design, and techniques. Students will learn advanced skills for conducting research in Science and Technology disciplines and prepare them to carry out independent research within thesis units.
Students will learn how to write a research proposal, and then develop their own research project. Students will receive instruction on how to conduct a literature review in order to contextualize the proposed research. Students will be taught to evaluate ethical issues relating to their topic. Through research, students will develop their oral and written communication abilities.

These opportunities for researcher development focus on all that VU researchers must know in order to produce high-quality research at VU. The Researcher Development Opportunities cover qualitative and quantitative methodologies, project design, and software skills related to methodology. Students will learn advanced research skills in Science and Technology disciplines and prepare themselves for independent research in the thesis units.

Students will be able:
1. Reflect critically on an aspect of Information and Communication Technology based on existing literature.
2. Research concepts should be communicated to both specialists and non-specialists.
3. Formulate the research question and/or hypothesis and design the methodology.
4. Research plans should be critically evaluated and revised for future research.
5. Discuss social and ethical issues critically in research.
