Cryopreservation - Origins IVF

The process of preserving an embryo/egg/sperm at sub-zero temperature is called cryopreservation. This is done in order to preserve the surplus egg, sperm, or embryo after an IVF cycle. The ‘spare’ embryo, egg, or sperm can be utilized for the couple in the next cycle or can be donated to another couple if stored carefully. Studies found that this technique of preservation can increase the chance of successful pregnancy with any IVF treatment cycle.

Cryopreservation is a method of preserving the health of embryos. It is the process of preserving an embryo at sub-zero temperature (-196°C) is called cryopreservation. This is done in order to preserve the surplus embryo after an IVF cycle. The ‘spare’ embryo can be utilized for the couple in the next cycle or can be donated to another couple if stored carefully. Studies found that this technique of preservation can increase the chance of successful pregnancy with any IVF treatment cycle.

Normally, a woman can produce many eggs in an IVF or ICSI treatment cycle. Embryo transfer uses the best among these. Healthy embryos left after the treatment will be frozen so that, they can be used later. Freezing or Cryopreservation is done to preserve the viability of embryos. Specialized freezing equipment is used to store the embryos. It can only be stored for an extended period. Otherwise, the embryos will lose their quality.

The main advantage of this procedure is that the frozen embryos do not require ovary stimulation or egg retrieval. Studies indicate a 70% success rate for embryo freezing.
