Who was Bahadur Shah Zafar?

Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal Emperor, ascended the throne in 1837 when he was 62 years old. He succeeded his father Akbar Shah II.


Political Situation when he became the emperor:

• He became an emperor at a time when Mughal Empire was confined to Delhi only.

• In the 18th century, Marathas had already defeated Mughals in the Central India. And British defeated Marathas in the 3 Anglo Maratha Wars

• In addition, after the Treaty of Allahabad in 1765, signed by Shah Alam II, Mughal Empire had also lost Awadh and Bengal to the Britishers.

• Hyderabad, Arcot and South India was already free from Mughals but had come under the control of British


Some Facts about Bahadur Shah Zafar:

• He was a noted Urdu poet who wrote many Urdu Ghazals.

• Most of the writings were lost in the 1857 war but the survived books were compiled into Kulliyyat-i-Zafar.

• In his court, more poets, writers and philosophers are there than warriors like Mirza Ghalib, Daag Dehlvi, Momin Khan, etc.

• He was a strong patron of art and culture.

• He was a tolerant Muslim who respected the religious beliefs of all communities including Hindus.

• East India Company used to give him pension as a tribute.


Bahadur Shah Zafar and the Revolt of 1857

• The famous Rebellion of 1857 started in Bengal where Mangal Pandey fired his senior officer after which he was hanged. • The revolt started from Meerut in UP and then quickly spread to Jhansi, Gwalior, Lucknow and Allahabad. • In Delhi, the leader of revolt was Bakht Khan. He persuaded Bahadur Shah Zafar, to lead the revolt. • Though he was just the nominal head of the revolt but he gave his consent for the revolt against the British.


Capture of Zafar by the British Forces:

• He was captured by the British from Humayun’s Tomb for his involvement in the rebellion and for giving tacit acceptance to the activities of Sepoys. • After his arrest, the British General William Hodson killed his 2 sons and his grandson.


Exiled to Rangoon

• Zafar was tried at the Red Fort by the company and he was exiled to Rangoon in Myanmar.

• In 1858. Zafar along with his 2 remaining sons and his wives were transported to Burma.

• He died there in 1862 at the age of 87.
