In the last few months, everything has been changed dramatically. There are some questions like “Do remote working or doing the video meetings for longer duration fatigue the brain?” No one can answer it correctly.
For answering all these questions, Microsoft has created the Work Trend Index. They used three sources for this project. One is the trends behind the use of the tools for the consumers. They also used the conclusion of the Harris Poll survey that had been conducted on around 2,000 workers from approximately six countries. And the third source is all the findings of the about 30 research projects done by Microsoft. These projects are conducted by understanding the workers’ behavior through surveys, interviews, focused groups, and the human brain’s study. Microsoft also did some interviews to provide more authenticity for their project.
As per the reports of Microsoft, the remote work and the video meets need a high level of concentration. If the meetings were long and you were on your system for 30-40 minutes or even more, you might get brain fatigue.
If you are working from home or remote locations for a longer time, you might face difficulty in adapting the office settings when you join the office again.
Right now, there are millions of people who are working from home. Video conferences, seminars, webinars, and other online events have become a trend. \
Jared Spataro, who is the Corporate Vice President for Microsoft 365, discusses the point of working from home. He stated that working from home is more tiring and challenging than in the office. He also said that nowadays, it is a common issue, and everyone is facing this issue.
Sparto added that the researchers from their “Human Factors Labs” have tried to discover the real reason behind this issue. The researchers confirm that video meets and other online video conferencing may exhaust your brain if you use them for a longer duration. It is a common fact of brain science.
Before this pandemic, Microsoft had started their study, as most of their workers were already working remotely. They have experimented this on their two teams with 13 members in each team with the same capabilities. One team was asked to work from the office, and the other team was asked to work remotely. Both the teams have given similar tasks so that they can be compared easily.
All the participants in this study were asked to wear EEG devices to help them monitor the brainwaves of the subject. The study’s findings show that those working remotely are feeling more tired than those working in the office.
Brainwaves are like the electrical signals that are in the brain. The brainwaves circulate according to the emotions, behavior, and primarily when your brain communicates with organs through the neurons. There are several frequencies at which the brain waves occur. The frequency of the brainwaves is more when you are in stress or overwork.
Microsoft stated that the researchers found something unexpected in their study. They found that the individuals who are working remotely face problems in working in the office, even after the research is over.
So, working from home is a useful module but has some adverse effects on the workers’ minds. Therefore, there are two learnings from this study. One is that try to limit the calls to 30 minutes to avoid brain fatigue. Another finding is that it will prove difficult for you to work from the office if you were working remotely.
